Your Summer Travel Survival Guide for Better Gut Health

Summer often means vacations, road trips, beach days, and a break from your normal routine. While travel can be exciting, it can also be surprisingly stressful on your digestive system.

Changes in sleep schedules, time zones, meal timing, and food choices can disrupt the delicate balance of bacteria living in your gut, known as the microbiome. As a result, many people experience bloating, constipation, digestive discomfort, fatigue, or even get sick while traveling.

The good news? A little preparation can go a long way. Here are some of my favorite strategies for keeping your gut happy while you're on the go this summer.

Pack Your Gut Health Essentials

When you're getting ready for a trip, don't just think about clothing and sunscreen. A few key supplements can make a huge difference in how you feel while traveling.

My two travel must-haves are digestive enzymes and probiotics.

Digestive enzymes help your body break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates more efficiently, which can be especially helpful when you're eating restaurant meals or foods you don't normally consume. They can help reduce bloating and digestive discomfort while supporting nutrient absorption.

Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which can be affected by travel stress, poor sleep, and changes in diet. If possible, choose a shelf-stable probiotic that's easy to travel with and begin taking it several days before your trip.

Other travel-friendly supplements worth considering include:

• Magnesium glycinate or citrate to support regular bowel movements
• Electrolytes to help maintain hydration
• Activated charcoal for occasional digestive support after questionable food choices

Hydration Matters More Than You Think

Between air travel, hot weather, increased activity, and the occasional vacation cocktail, dehydration can sneak up on you quickly.

A simple goal is to consume roughly half your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, someone weighing 150 pounds would aim for about 75 ounces daily.

But hydration isn't just about water. Your body also needs electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium to properly absorb and utilize that water.

Without adequate electrolytes, you may experience headaches, fatigue, sluggish digestion, and low energy.

Consider adding a clean electrolyte powder to your daily routine while traveling. Look for options without excess sugar, artificial colors, or unnecessary additives.

Another gut-friendly hydration option? Bone broth.

Bone broth naturally contains minerals and electrolytes while providing nutrients that support digestive health. During the summer months, you can enjoy it in chilled soups such as gazpacho or incorporate it into light seasonal recipes.

Prepare Your Gut Before You Leave

One of the best ways to support digestion while traveling is to strengthen your gut before your trip even begins.

In the week leading up to travel, focus on nourishing foods that help support the microbiome, including:

• Bone broth
• Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and yogurt
• Fiber-rich vegetables
• High-quality proteins
• Homemade meals prepared with whole ingredients

The healthier and more resilient your gut is before you leave, the easier it will be to handle occasional indulgences, airport meals, and schedule disruptions.

Once you return home, continue supporting your digestive system with nourishing foods. While travel can temporarily shift the microbiome, the gut is remarkably adaptable and often rebounds quickly when given the right support.

Set Yourself Up for Success Before You Return

One of my favorite travel hacks happens before I even leave the house.

I like to stock my freezer and refrigerator with nourishing foods so they're ready when I return home. After days of eating out, your digestive system will appreciate having simple, easy-to-digest meals waiting for you.

Some of my go-to options include:

Bone Broth

Rich in collagen and nutrients that help support the digestive tract and overall gut health.

Blended Soups

These are one of my favorite gut-healing foods. They're loaded with nutrients and fiber, yet much easier for the digestive system to process. I often describe them as "pre-digested" because the blending does much of the work for your gut.

Cooked Vegetables

Soft, cooked vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, and zucchini are gentle on digestion while providing important nutrients and prebiotic fiber.

Fairy Gutmother Meal Delivery

My gut-healthy meal prep is freshly prepared using clean ingredients delivered right to your door.

I always keep a few of my gut-healthy meals in the freezer for busy weeks and post-travel recovery. Each meal is rich in protein and fiber and made with clean ingredients specifically chosen to support digestion and overall gut health.

Returning to warm, nourishing meals can help your digestive system reset and ease the transition back into your normal routine.

It's also important to remember that fiber plays a key role in feeding beneficial gut bacteria. While travel can expose us to unfamiliar microbes and foods, fiber helps encourage a healthier balance within the microbiome once you're home.

Additional Tips for Smooth Digestion While Traveling

• Try to maintain regular meal times whenever possible. Your digestive system thrives on consistency.

• Incorporate movement each day, even if it's just a short walk. Physical activity helps support digestion and regularity.

• Slow down when you eat. Chewing thoroughly and eating mindfully can improve digestion and reduce bloating.

• Avoid stacking multiple high-sugar, highly processed meals back-to-back, especially when flying or adjusting to a new time zone.

Enjoy Your Summer Without Sacrificing Your Gut Health

Travel doesn't have to mean digestive distress.

With a little preparation, strategic supplementation, proper hydration, and a plan for recovery, you can enjoy your summer adventures while keeping your gut feeling its best.

Your gut is incredibly resilient. Give it the support it needs, and it can help keep you energized, comfortable, and ready to make the most of every trip.

Wishing you happy travels and even happier digestion this summer!
