Spring Clean Your Gut: 4 Tips for a Natural Cleanse

We're officially one month into the spring season, which is the perfect time to get serious about your gut health. With all the gut health trends, fads, and diets out there, it's time for a simple way to spring clean your gut — one that's convenient and easy to commit to.

As a Nutritional Therapist and Certified GAPS (Gut & Psychology Syndrome) Practitioner, I encourage my clients to forget the all-or-nothing method and start incorporating a few easy tips to kickstart their health journey. Get ready to feel amazing this season, travel without feeling bloated and sick, and start healing your gut.

Here are 4 ways to naturally cleanse your gut:

1. Take digestive enzymes for optimal digestion

Digestive enzymes play an important role in breaking down food into nutrients that our bodies can absorb and burn effectively. However, factors such as stress, food sensitivities, and certain health conditions can impair our natural enzyme production, leading to digestive discomfort and nutrient deficiencies.

Consider incorporating a digestive enzyme supplement into your routine to boost your enzyme levels and support your digestive system. You'll want a comprehensive formula that aids in the digestion of proteins, carbs, and fats. Taking digestive enzymes 30 minutes before eating a meal can help optimize digestion and alleviate symptoms like bloating, gas, and indigestion.

2. Make homemade bone broth recipes

Bone broth is one of my favorite recipes. It’s essential for its gut-healing properties and is packed with protein, nutrients, and collagen. This nourishing and delicious broth provides essential amino acids, minerals, and gelatin, which support the gut lining and promote digestive health.

Making homemade bone broth is pretty easy, and I make it weekly. To make your own bone broth, simmer bones (such as chicken or beef) in water with vegetables and herbs for several hours to extract the maximum nutrients and flavor. Enjoy it as a warm and soothing beverage or use it as a base for soups, stews, and sauces.

3. Do a 3-Day gut reset

A gut reset can help rebalance your gut microbiome and promote healthy bacteria in your gut. It can also give you a break from foods that are causing inflammation in your gut, giving it a rest so it can absorb nutrients from healthy foods. Eliminating certain foods and adding in specific vegetables, broths, and fermented foods can act as a natural probiotic, which can serve as fuel for healing your gut.

I created a free three-day gut reset to teach you the basics of gut health, what daily habits harm your gut, and how to maintain new healthy habits.

4. Embrace gut-friendly foods

In addition to incorporating digestive enzymes, bone broth, and new health habits, it's important to prioritize gut-friendly foods that promote overall well-being. Start by eating whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, resistant starches like beans and potatoes (these are especially great for feeding the good bacteria in the gut), protein, and healthy fats.

I also recommend reducing your intake of processed foods, refined sugars, and artificial ingredients, which can disrupt gut health and contribute to inflammation. You'll also want to drink plenty of water throughout the day and manage stress through walking, meditation, and regular exercise.

Spring cleaning your gut is a proactive way to support your overall health and well-being. Incorporating these gut-healthy habits can improve your digestive health and feel your best from the inside out.
