The Best Spring Cleanse Might Be Supporting Your Gut

When spring arrives, talk about detoxes and cleanses seems to be everywhere. Juice fasts, expensive supplements, and strict protocols promise to “reset” the body, but they can often feel overwhelming. The truth is, your body already has powerful systems designed to eliminate waste and keep things balanced. One of the most important of these systems is the gut.

Instead of turning to extreme cleanses, a more effective approach is to focus on habits that support digestion and your body’s natural detox pathways. When the gut is functioning well, the body is better able to process nutrients, eliminate waste, and maintain overall balance.

Here are a few simple ways to support your gut this spring.

Bone Broth for Gut Support

Bone broth is one of my favorite tools for nourishing the digestive system. It contains collagen and gelatin, which help support and maintain the integrity of the gut lining. This can be especially helpful for individuals dealing with digestive discomfort or increased intestinal permeability.

Bone broth is also naturally rich in amino acids that play important roles in the body. Glycine, for example, helps support liver function and assists the body’s natural detox processes. Because the liver is responsible for filtering and neutralizing toxins, nutrients that support it can be incredibly beneficial.

Another amino acid found in bone broth, glutamine, helps maintain gut health and supports digestion. These nutrients also contribute to the production of glutathione, one of the body’s most important antioxidants used to combat oxidative stress.

In addition, bone broth provides minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which help support hydration, cellular function, and kidney health—another important pathway the body uses to eliminate waste.

Reduce Processed Foods

Rather than investing in complicated detox programs, one of the most powerful changes you can make is simply reducing processed foods and excess sugar. Think of this less as a detox and more as a reset for your body.

Ingredients such as hydrogenated oils, artificial additives, refined sugars, and stabilizers can irritate the gut and disrupt the microbiome's balance. Taking a break from these foods allows the digestive system to recover and function more efficiently. Once things feel balanced again, these foods can be reintroduced occasionally and in moderation.

Add More Soups

Soups are one of the easiest and most comforting ways to support digestion. Because the ingredients are cooked and softened, they are often easier for the body to break down and absorb.

I like to think of soups as “pre-digested” meals. When they’re made with bone broth, they become even more nourishing and supportive for the gut.

Herbed Peas & asparagus soup

Instead of a juice cleanse, a short period of focusing on soups and broth-based meals can provide the body with valuable nutrients while still feeling satisfying and energizing. This approach can be especially helpful after holidays, travel, or any time your digestion feels a little off.

Support Healthy Digestion

Helping the body break down food properly is another important piece of gut health. Digestive enzymes taken with meals can assist in breaking food down so nutrients can be absorbed more efficiently.

Certain foods can also naturally support digestion. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and fermented cabbage provide beneficial bacteria that help maintain balance in the gut microbiome. These foods can also reduce bloating and support regular digestion.

Another helpful addition is pineapple. Pineapple contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that helps the body break down protein and absorb nutrients more easily. Bromelain also has anti-inflammatory properties that may help ease digestive discomfort after meals.

Supporting the Body’s Natural Reset

Instead of chasing the latest detox trend, it can be helpful to remember that the body already has the tools it needs to cleanse and renew itself. By supporting digestion and gut health, you’re strengthening one of the body’s most important detox pathways.

Small shifts—like eating whole foods, incorporating broth-based meals, and supporting digestion—can make a meaningful difference. These simple habits help nourish the body from within so you can feel lighter, more energized, and ready for the season ahead.

If you’re ready to give your gut a little extra support this season, I created a free 3-Day Gut Reset to help you get started.
