It can be hard to ensure that we get the daily dose of vitamins and nutrients that we need. It’s difficult enough to maintain a healthy diet and exercise as it is, so incorporating supplements can be highly beneficial. Taking vitamins every day is a great start, but as we get older our bodies become worn down and can’t always produce a healthy balance of the essentials we need. Did you know that by the age of 60 we lose up to 50% of our collagen?

Collagen is generally synonymous with tight skin, beauty creams, and a healthy glow, but did you know that collagen has a multitude of other benefits? Collagen makes up 30% of the protein in our bodies, making it the most abundant protein. There are 28 types of collagen, the most common being Type I and Type III. Collagen is found in our skin, bones, muscle, and tendons, and plays a key role in several essential bodily functions. Collagen is typically found in meat-derived products, like bone broth, but we don’t always get enough of it in our daily diet.

If you aren’t getting enough then you can try a large number of great supplements that can easily be integrated into your day-to-day life.  Most hydrolyzed collagen supplements are tasteless and can be mixed with smoothies, beverages, or even incorporated into meals. One great way to start your morning off right is with an energizing matcha latte.

Matcha is a green tea in powder form that comes from Japan and is highly caffeinated. It has the unique quality of providing calming energy that lasts up to 4-6 hours. Early research has also shown that matcha can aid in weight loss. Matcha lattes are simple to make and a great way to give your morning an energizing kick-start, and it’s delicious too!

Here is a tasty and simple recipe easy to whip up every morning.

Matcha Latte

  • 1 teaspoon matcha

  • 2 tablespoons of hydrolyzed collagen

  • 2 teaspoons honey {optional}

  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla {optional}

  • ¼ cup water

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cashew milk {or milk of choice}

  1. Put matcha powder in hot water and whisk thoroughly until powder is dissolved.

  2. Add in collagen powder, honey, vanilla, warm cashew milk.

  3. Whisk the ingredients together, or, if you have a jar, combine ingredients in jar, seal lid tightly, and shake for extra frothiness.

  4. Pour into a mug and enjoy.

Another incredibly nutritious beverage is golden milk. Golden milk can be made and stored in the fridge up to five days. The key ingredient in golden milk is turmeric, which also has several health benefits like reducing anxiety and inflammation. It also supports brain, respiratory, blood, digestion, joint, and heart health. Add collagen to the mix and you’ve got a superhero beverage to start your day!

  • 8 ounces of pure coconut milk

  • 1 inch fresh turmeric thinly sliced, unpeeled

  • 1 tablespoon collagen hydrolysate

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • Pinch of finely ground black pepper {black peppercorn increases turmeric absorption by up to 2000%}

  • Pinch of ground cinnamon {or one cinnamon stick}

  • 1 inch fresh ginger thinly sliced, unpeeled

  • Pinch of pink Himalayan salt

  1. Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a low boil. Let simmer for about 10 minutes.

  2. Strain contents, pour into a mug and enjoy!

This beverage not only tastes delicious, but between the collagen and turmeric, it is a mood and metabolism booster, as well as energizer.

Both matcha and golden milk are excellent ways to ensure you have an energizing and tasty morning, and adding collagen to them gives you that extra balance your body may be missing. If these beverages aren’t for you, collagen can be added to just about anything and works great in smoothies too.
